Starting October 2, crews will be working in the northeast quadrant of the city to level uneven sidewalks and improve accessibility.

SafeSidewalks Canada is completing the work, which involves grinding down raised sections of concrete where tripping hazards exist.

The process is quick, taking about 10 minutes at each of the 280 sites, and no vehicle traffic impacts are expected. Pedestrian access may be briefly interrupted in active areas, but crews will accommodate residents with mobility needs through an on-site strategy. Work is scheduled around school hours to reduce impacts in school zones.

“Improving sidewalk safety is about keeping people connected to their neighbourhoods and making it easier for everyone to get where they need to go,” said City of Grande Prairie Mayor, Jackie Clayton. “By taking a proactive approach to remove tripping hazards, we’re helping residents of all ages and abilities travel more safely and confidently.”

This initiative reflects the City’s focus on creating safe, welcoming spaces for all residents. By addressing sidewalk hazards in a cost-effective way, we are ensuring smoother, safer pathways that support an inclusive and caring community.
