The City of Grande Prairie has launched a new survey to engage on park and playground use throughout the community as we prepare for the next cycle of budget planning.

The goal of the survey is to gain a better idea of who uses the parks and playgrounds, which locations are most popular, and what features are in highest demand.

Results of the survey are being used to gauge the needs and wants of our residents as the City plans for the future of park space.

The City of Grande Prairie appreciates all feedback to help inform the budget deliberation process for the development, maintenance and enhancement of services related to parks, playgrounds and recreational play in Grande Prairie.

The survey takes approximately 10 minutes to complete and can be accessed at engage.cityofgp.com/parks-playgrounds.

Background

The City of Grande Prairie has an annual Parks Outdoor Asset Management budget of $1,890,803, which includes the repairs and maintenance of all City owned playgrounds including upkeep through monthly scheduled inspections by a certified inspector.

In addition, there is $20,000 budgeted every second year for playground surface replacement and $450,000 budgeted annually for playground equipment replacement from the City's capital budget.

The City currently owns and maintains 103 playgrounds across Grande Prairie; these do not include playgrounds located on school sites. Developers install playgrounds when constructing new neighbourhoods. Playgrounds are constructed to meet specifications, inspected and are then under warranty for two years.  The City assumes ownership once the playground has been constructed and assumes the responsibility for ongoing repair, maintenance and life cycle replacement.  The typical lifespan of a playground structure ranges between 15 to 20 years.

The size and location of playgrounds are determined when plans are prepared for new neighbourhoods and through the Parks Master Plan.  The type of playground equipment and park amenities are determined based on neighbourhood considerations.
