As residents of the City of Grande Prairie, it is essential to have a clear understanding of property boundaries and tree ownership. Parcel boundaries can vary from site to site, and knowing who owns the trees located on or near your property is crucial.

“Understanding property boundaries and tree ownership is crucial for residents of City of Grande Prairie. At the City, we provide valuable information and guidance, empowering residents to make informed decisions about tree care and maintenance,” said Lead Arborist Lisa Rehaluk. “Whether it's confirming property lines or recognizing the responsibility of the City for trees on public land, our goal is to ensure the longevity and beauty of our urban forest. Let's work together to nurture and protect the trees that enhance our community.”

The City owns a portion of land along the front and sometimes the side of every titled property, known as the "Boulevard." Primarily reserved for utility location purposes, this area holds significant importance. Prior to commencing any construction project or landscaping endeavour, we strongly recommend confirming the location of your property lines using your Real Property Report or contacting the City for assistance.

Residential boulevards often present ideal spaces for planting trees, as they offer protection from harsh weather conditions and road activities. If you have trees located in front or on the side of your property, they might actually be situated on the City boulevard. It's important to note that all trees situated on public land are the responsibility of the City, as outlined in bylaw C-1310. Our dedicated team of Certified Arborists takes care of these trees by providing essential services such as trimming, removals, and replacements. If you are planning to perform any maintenance or removal of a tree near your property, we encourage you to contact the City to confirm ownership and ensure the proper care of the tree.

On the other hand, trees located on private land are the responsibility of the property owner. The City does not perform any maintenance, removal, or clean-up efforts on privately owned trees. It is vital for property owners to understand their obligations in caring for and maintaining trees on their own land.

The City of Grande Prairie remains committed to maintaining a thriving urban forest and supporting residents in their tree care efforts. Together, let's ensure the longevity and beauty of our city's trees.
