The City of Grande Prairie is enhancing the median on the west side of Bear Creek between 100 Avenue and 99 Avenue, bringing together landscaping and stormwater management improvements in one highly visible corridor.
Funded through Council-directed Community Enhancement funding, the project includes the installation of a bioswale within the median. A bioswale is a landscaped feature designed to capture and slow stormwater runoff, allowing water to filter through soil and vegetation before entering the stormwater system and ultimately Bear Creek.
The project supports multiple community benefits by:
- Improving stormwater filtration and water quality.
- Reducing runoff entering the stormwater system.
- Increasing vegetation within the median space.
- Enhancing the appearance of the corridor.
"Thoughtful infrastructure investments help create a community that is both functional and attractive," said Mayor Jackie Clayton. "By combining landscaping improvements with stormwater management features, this project enhances an important corridor while supporting Grande Prairie's livability and overall appearance."
Preliminary work is already underway, including site preparation and the removal of accumulated sand and debris from the median area. Construction activities are expected to continue through June.
Temporary lane closures may be required in lanes adjacent to the median while work is underway. Traffic will be maintained through the area and crews will work to minimize disruptions where possible.
Motorists are asked to slow down, follow posted signage and use caution when travelling through the work zone.
