Residential street sweeping begins Monday, June 15 in Week A neighbourhoods across Grande Prairie.
Street sweeping removes sand, gravel and debris left behind after winter operations, helping keep neighbourhood streets cleaner and supporting the long-term maintenance of road and storm drainage infrastructure. Neighbourhoods are typically swept at least twice during the sweeping season, with additional passes completed as needed based on weather conditions and the amount of debris on roadways. Sweepers may make multiple passes on a street during a single visit to remove as much material as possible.
Residential street sweeping follows the same neighbourhood rotation used for the City's residential snow clearing program. Each neighbourhood is planned for sweeping the day before its regular waste collection day during its designated Week A or Week B rotation, weather and operational conditions permitting.
Residents can help crews complete a more thorough sweep by moving vehicles off the street from 7 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. when sweepers are working in the area and giving sweepers and support equipment plenty of space to operate safely.
"As crews move into residential neighbourhoods, residents can play an important role in helping the program succeed," said City of Grande Prairie Mayor Jackie Clayton. "Moving vehicles off the street while sweeping is underway gives crews better access to the curb line and helps them complete a more thorough clean-up. It's a simple way we can work together to keep our neighbourhoods clean and welcoming."
While crews make every effort to follow the planned rotation, street sweeping operations are weather dependent and daily progress can vary based on road conditions and the amount of debris in each neighbourhood. The schedule is intended to provide residents with an estimate of when crews are expected in their area. Any neighbourhoods not completed during their scheduled rotation will be revisited during subsequent passes.
The City will provide weekly service updates throughout the residential sweeping program, including schedule adjustments, weather-related delays and information about neighbourhoods that may require follow-up sweeping. Residents are encouraged to follow the City of Grande Prairie on Facebook for the latest updates throughout the sweeping season.
