December snowfall is already above average, with more snow expected in the coming days. Winter parking bans are in effect on permanent snow routes weekdays from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Residents are reminded to move vehicles off those Priority 1 and 2 roads so crews can clear snow fully and keep essential routes moving.
Why winter parking bans matter
When vehicles are parked on the street during a parking ban, snow clearing equipment cannot fully clear the road. This can leave snow packed down and create uneven driving conditions. In some cases, crews may be unable to clear the road at all.
Moving vehicles off the street allows crews to clear snow curb to curb. This helps snow clearing happen faster and improves driving conditions for everyone.
When parking bans apply
Winter parking bans are declared after significant snowfall or during major snow clearing work. They focus on Priority 1 and Priority 2 routes, which are the city’s most important roads.
These routes include main roads, transit routes and roads used by emergency services.
Parking is also not permitted at any time when windrows are present on the roadway. This helps ensure buses, emergency vehicles and snow clearing equipment can pass safely.
Temporary parking bans are in place on your neighbourhood’s scheduled residential snow clearing day. Keep vehicles off the road from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on your assigned day.
Residents are encouraged to check the City’s website and social media channels for updates and to move vehicles off the road when a parking ban is in place.
“When residents move their vehicles during a parking ban, our crews can clear roads fully and keep snow removal moving,” said City of Grande Prairie Mayor Jackie Clayton. “That cooperation makes a real difference. I want to thank residents for working with us, and our snow clearing crews for their long hours and continued efforts during an active winter season.”
Snow clearing progress this winter
The City has recorded approximately 36 centimetres of snowfall so far this December, with another 10 to 20 centimetres expected over the coming days. In response, transportation crews are operating 24 hours a day through the holiday period to maintain approximately 588 kilometres of city-owned roadways.
Working together this winter
- Residents are encouraged to report snow and ice concerns through the City’s online reporting tool.
- During residential snow clearing, an interactive map is available online to show which neighbourhoods are being cleared in real time.
- Residents can sign up to receive a text message reminder the evening before their neighbourhood’s scheduled clearing day.
- Staying informed, moving vehicles during parking bans and reporting concerns all help crews clear roads more effectively.
