Construction on the Crystal Lake Arboretum began this week, bringing new tree groves, walking trails and interpretive features to Crystal Lake Park.

Located south of the Bike Skills Park, the Crystal Lake Arboretum will transform an open area of the park into a welcoming space where residents and visitors can explore native tree species, enjoy nature and discover the stories behind the forests that shape northern Alberta.

The arboretum will feature a collection of native tree species with interpretive signage throughout the site, highlighting each species' role in local ecosystems, traditional Indigenous knowledge and uses, and the important role healthy forests continue to play in the region's environment, economy and way of life.

"Crystal Lake Park is already one of Grande Prairie's most enjoyed outdoor spaces, and the arboretum will add another reason for residents and visitors to explore everything the park has to offer," said City of Grande Prairie Mayor, Jackie Clayton. “This project creates a beautiful new place to enjoy, learn and connect with nature while celebrating the forests that make our region unique.”

The Crystal Lake Arboretum is a tangible example of the City's Urban Forest Strategy in action. By increasing tree diversity, expanding the urban canopy and creating opportunities for environmental education, the project supports a healthy, resilient and adaptable urban forest for future generations.

Building on the park's existing recreation amenities, the arboretum enhances community life by creating another destination for outdoor recreation, relaxation and discovery. It supports the City's 2026–2029 Strategic Plan by investing in high-quality public spaces that strengthen neighbourhood livability, encourage active lifestyles and make Grande Prairie an even more attractive place to live and visit.

The project also demonstrates a collaborative and resourceful approach to enhancing community amenities. Funding is provided by the Forest Resource Improvement Association of Alberta (FRIAA) through sponsorship from Canfor, Weyerhaeuser and West Fraser Timber Co. Ltd., with the City of Grande Prairie providing project management and implementation support.

Construction is anticipated to be complete by the end of August, weather permitting. While work is underway, temporary localized trail closures or short detours may be required within the project area. Access to surrounding park amenities, including the Bike Skills Park, will be maintained wherever possible.

Residents are encouraged to follow posted signage and respect temporary barriers while visiting Crystal Lake Park during construction.
