A small seed can be the start of something bigger. Residents are invited to get a jump on spring planting with GP Grows: Early Sprouts, a free seed program at Muskoseepi Park that makes it easy to start growing at home.
From March 2 to 8, residents can drop by the Ernie Radbourne Pavilion in Muskoseepi Park to pick up free seed packs for early indoor planting. The seed bank is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Friday, and noon to 6 p.m. on weekends.
The seed bank offers a variety of easy-to-grow options, including tomatoes, peppers, herbs and flowers. There’s no cost, no registration, and no experience required. Just stop in, take what you need, and get growing at home.
Available varieties include tomatoes, peppers, herbs, flowers and broccoli, giving gardeners of all experience levels an easy way to start seedlings indoors and transplant them outdoors later in the spring, typically around the May long weekend or after the final frost.
“GP Grows: Early Sprouts is a new addition to our annual GP Grows program that is making it easy and fun to start growing at home,” said City of Grande Prairie Mayor Jackie Clayton. “We’re thankful for the strong community response to the program which allows us to expand each year and create meaningful ways for residents to become environmental stewards in their own home and save money while building a caring, connected community.”
GP Grows is a City initiative that supports residents in growing food and flowers in three main ways: helping people grow at home, offering learning opportunities across the community, and providing City spaces where people can learn and experience gardening first-hand. The City will also share reminders and tips through the spring to support hardening off seedlings and preparing for outdoor planting.
Residents are encouraged to take only what they need so more people can participate.
