Portions of South Bear Creek trails in Grande Prairie are temporarily closing starting October 15, 2024, as part of the City of Grande Prairie’s ongoing FireSmart Vegetation Management work to mitigate wildfire risks.

The closures are essential to ensure public safety as crews operate heavy equipment in the area. Alternative trail routes are available for those wishing to enjoy the trails in South Bear Creek Park.

Trail Closures and Schedule:

  • Treatment Area 2: Starting October 15, 2024, weather permitting, this area requires the closure of a portion of the Outer Waxwing trail. Trail users can use the Inner Waxwing trail as an alternative route during this period.
  • Treatment Area 1: Work is scheduled to begin on October 20, 2024, in this area, resulting in the closure of several smaller trail links near the Country Club West neighbourhood. Users are advised to remain on the Ball Diamond side of the work area as an alternative during the closure.

The two sites were selected based on recommendations from the Grande Prairie Fire Department and the 2019 South Bear Creek Wildfire Mitigation Strategy. These areas were prioritized due to their high fuel levels and proximity to critical infrastructure, including the water treatment plant and nearby homes.

Project Background:
Vegetation management in these areas will include thinning dense vegetation, removing dead or fire-prone trees, pruning lower branches, clearing underbrush and mulching. This work aims to reduce the wildfire risk and enhance community safety.

“As we continue our FireSmart Vegetation Management efforts, it’s important that we prioritize safety for both the community and work crews,” says City of Grande Prairie Mayor, Jackie Clayton. “These trail closures are a necessary step to ensure that this crucial work is completed safely and effectively. We appreciate the community’s patience and cooperation as we work to reduce wildfire risks and protect our neighborhoods.”
