UPDATE as of 10:10 November 22, 2025:
The Grande Prairie Fire Department concluded fire response at the Farmers’ Market at 02:30 November 22, 2025.
Gaining access to the attic from multiple areas outside the structure allowed crews to successfully get the fire under control, re-enter the structure and mitigate further losses within.
The nature of the building construction and wind made this an extremely difficult fire to action and has resulted in extensive fire damage to the roof and attic. Smoke, heat and water damage is present throughout many other parts of the structure.
At it's peak, the response included six heavy apparatus and two support apparatus on scene with ~25 firefighters including a CGPRFS ladder crew and numerous off-duty GPFD members. This is in addition to GPPS, RCMP, and EMS support.
“The GPFD is grateful for the commitment the team showed last night including numerous off-duty staff and the CGPRFS, who all worked with diligence and dedication, understanding the significance of this structure to the community, “ said Fire Chief Mark VanWerkhoven.
Apex Security is on scene securing the area and monitoring for flare up.
A GPFD Fire Investigator will begin the investigation today. Cause and origin is currently unknown.
The GPFD thanks the community for their understanding and cooperation during the response.
The Grande Prairie Fire Department (GPFD) with assistance from the County of Grande Prairie Regional Fire Service is currently responding to a fire at the Grande Prairie Farmers’ Market.
At approximately 20:30, GPFD arrived on scene of a structure fire in the area of 101 St. and 101 Ave.
The source of the smoke and fire was located, but excessive heat and fire made a response from the interior impossible.
Response was reestablished from the exterior via ladder trucks and access holes which were cut in the gables and roof.
Crews report good effect from the current strategy but it's an extremely hot and extensive fire which will required a sustained, overnight response.
The extent of the damage is unknown at this time. No other structures are currently at risk.
More updates will be provided on City and GPFD channels when available.
