The City of Grande Prairie is launching the 2026 construction season with a continued focus on growth, connectivity and long-term investment, supported by $28.5 million allocated to Roads and Infrastructure in the 2026 Budget.
Construction season plays an important role in keeping Grande Prairie moving and functioning year-round. From supporting safe travel on arterial roads and neighbourhood streets to improving drainage during spring melt and severe weather events, infrastructure work helps protect essential systems residents depend on every day.
Ongoing investment in roads, drainage and public infrastructure also supports economic activity by improving connectivity, helping goods and services move efficiently and ensuring Grande Prairie remains prepared for future growth and development.
The City’s 2026–2030 Capital Plan prioritizes renewing existing infrastructure while planning for long-term needs, with a focus on transportation networks, drainage systems and recreation and cultural spaces. The City continues to prioritize preventative maintenance, strategic rehabilitation and timely upgrades that extend the lifespan of infrastructure, improve service reliability and help reduce the need for more significant and costly repairs in the future.
The 2026 construction season builds on continued infrastructure investment in recent years, with ongoing work focused on maintaining roads, upgrading stormwater systems, reinvesting in City facilities and expanding urban tree canopy throughout the community. Investments in tree replacement programs and urban groves continue to support a more resilient, attractive and livable city while contributing to long-term environmental sustainability.
This includes strategic investment in:
- $15.23 million for road repairs (including the Minor resurfacing, concrete crushing programs, and paved lane repairs
- $5.0 million for the Mission Heights Storm Project
- $4.5 million for storm line replacement and rehabilitation
- $1.5 million for intersection improvements
- $600,000 for bridge repairs
- $500,000 for sidewalk and pathway repairs
- $316,000 for Inspection Programs
- $200,000 for spillway repairs and maintenance
"Construction season is one of the most visible ways residents see long-term investment at work,” said Grande Prairie Mayor Jackie Clayton. "These projects help keep Grande Prairie moving, support future growth and strengthen the infrastructure our community depends on every day.”
These investments support Council’s Strategic Priorities by advancing Economic Opportunity and Resilience through infrastructure that enables investment, connectivity and long-term growth, while also supporting Infrastructure and Financial Sustainability through proactive asset management and responsible long-term planning.
Residents can expect to see crews working in various areas throughout the season. Updates on specific projects, timelines and any impacts will be shared as work progresses.
