The City of Grande Prairie invites residents to swim, skate, play and explore local history with free community activities on Saturday, August 29 in celebration of Alberta Day.
Residents can make a splash with free public swimming at Eastlink Centre and Aquatera Outdoor Pool, or take advantage of free access to the fitness centre, West Fraser Fieldhouse, walking and running track and squash courts at Eastlink Centre. Residents can also skate and meet members of the Grande Prairie Storm at Bonnetts Energy Centre. For those looking to explore local history, the Grande Prairie Museum and Reverend Forbes Homestead will also be open, with admission always free.
This Alberta Day marks 121 years since Alberta became a province on September 1, 1905. More than a century later, the day is an opportunity to celebrate the people and communities that continue to shape the province. The day also recognizes the Indigenous Peoples who have lived on and cared for this land for generations.
“Alberta Day is a chance to celebrate what makes this province such a special place to call home, including the strong communities that have grown here,” said City of Grande Prairie Mayor Jackie Clayton. “In Grande Prairie, we’re celebrating by inviting residents to enjoy our recreation spaces and explore some of the history that has shaped this region.”
Try something new at Eastlink Centre
Free access to Eastlink Centre is available from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., including:
- West Fraser Fieldhouse
- Fitness centre
- Walking and running track
- Squash courts
The aquatics area will also offer two free public swim waves:
- Wave 1: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with a dive contest at noon.
- Wave 2: 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., with a dive contest at 2:30 p.m.
Regular admission and schedules apply before 10:30 a.m. and after 4:30 p.m.
Make a splash at Aquatera Outdoor Pool
Keep the celebration going with free admission to Aquatera Outdoor Pool from 4 to 8 p.m.
Skate with the Grande Prairie Storm
Head to Bonnetts Energy Centre from 6 to 7 p.m. for a free skate and autograph session with members of the Grande Prairie Storm.
Step into local history
Explore the stories and history of Grande Prairie and the surrounding region at the City’s heritage sites:
- Grande Prairie Museum: noon to 6 p.m.
- Reverend Forbes Homestead: 1 to 4:30 p.m.
