The City of Grande Prairie is beginning targeted road improvements on the westbound lanes of 116 Avenue between Lakeland Drive and 100 Street as part of ongoing efforts to renew sections of the corridor.
Work begins on Tuesday, June 30 and is expected to continue until mid to late August, weather permitting.
This work builds on previous upgrades completed along different stretches of 116 Avenue and supports the City’s ongoing investment in sustainable road infrastructure. Projects are planned based on roadway condition, priority and annual budgets, with sections of the corridor renewed over time as needs are identified and prioritized.
Planned improvements include:
- Road reconstruction.
- Storm sewer improvements.
- Spot replacements of concrete curb and gutter.
- Pavement line markings.
- Landscaping.
Construction is being completed in phases to reduce traffic impacts and help manage congestion through the work area. While drivers can expect delays, impacts will shift as work progresses and will not affect the entire construction area at the same time. Nearby businesses will remain open and accessible throughout construction.
Construction phasing
The first phase begins near Lakeland Drive and continues west through the east side of the 99 Street intersection. The westbound lanes will be excavated and reconstructed, while two-way traffic is maintained using the eastbound lanes.
When construction reaches 99 Street, crews will work on one half of the intersection at a time. The intersection will remain open, and intersection-related impacts will only be in place during the portion of work taking place at 99 Street, not for the full construction period.
Once work on the east side of the 99 Street intersection is complete, crews will begin the second phase on the west side of the intersection and continue road reconstruction toward 100 Street, stopping just before the intersection. This year’s work is focused on the westbound lanes between Lakeland Drive and 100 Street and does not extend west of 100 Street.
The construction phasing outlined above reflects the current plan and may shift as work progresses based on site conditions, contractor sequencing or operational needs. Updates will be provided as needed.
Traffic impacts
During work at the 99 Street intersection, the intersection is expected to remain open but operate at reduced capacity.
Drivers can expect:
- Two-way traffic to be maintained through the intersection.
- One side of the 99 Street intersection to be closed at a time while the other side remains open to traffic.
- Access to all directions of travel to remain available, although turning movements may be slower due to reduced lane capacity.
- Traffic to shift depending on which side of the intersection is under construction.
- Changing traffic patterns as construction progresses.
- Delays, especially during peak travel times.
Drivers are encouraged to plan extra travel time, follow posted signage and use caution near excavation areas, workers and shifting traffic lanes.
Pedestrian, business and transit impacts
Businesses in the nearby plazas remain open and operational throughout construction, with access maintained.
Pedestrian access will be maintained for most of construction. Temporary detours are expected during trail-related work on the north side of 116 Avenue. Detour timing and routes will be shared through future service updates once confirmed.
Transit delays are expected on routes travelling through the area. No transit stop closures or route detours are expected at this time. If this changes, an update will be provided.
The City thanks residents, businesses and drivers for their patience as this important infrastructure work continues.
