The Eastlink Centre is proud to host the National Safe Swimming Recovery Program, in partnership with the Government of Canada and the Canadian Parks and Recreation Association (CPRA).
This initiative aims to address the national lifeguard shortage by offering subsidized certifications and employment opportunities for youth in the aquatics field.
About the Program
- Registration fee subsidy: The program provides a 100% subsidy for aquatic certification courses including Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross, National Lifeguard and Intermediate First Aid.
- Comprehensive training: Participants can advance through multiple levels of training.
- Recruitment opportunities: Participants who successfully complete their National Lifeguard certification may be eligible for employment opportunities at the Eastlink Centre.
- Travel assistance: Travel funding is available for participants who may have difficulty attending certification courses due to commute cost, including subsidization of bus passes, mileage and more if required.
Key Training Dates
- Oct. 7 to 9, 2024: Intermediate First Aid + Stroke Improvement (registration cutoff: Sept. 27)
- Oct. 15 and 16, 2024: Bronze Medallion (registration cutoff: Oct. 4)
- Oct. 21 to 23, 2024: Bronze Cross (registration cutoff: Oct. 11)
- Oct. 28 to Nov. 1, 2024: National Lifeguard (registration cutoff: Oct. 18)
Participant Requirements
The NSSRP is open to individuals from across the region aged 15 to 30 who are either a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or protected under the Refugee Act.
The program especially encourages participation from those who face barriers to employment, in particular, individuals who are:
- Indigenous.
- From low-income backgrounds.
- Living in rural/remote areas.
- A member of official language minority community.
- Visible minorities.
- Newcomers to Canada.
