According to section 58(1) of the Local Authorities Election Act, any employee who is eligible to vote has the right to three consecutive hours for voting while their voting station is open.
If the hours of an employee's employment do not allow for three consecutive hours, the employer shall allow the employee any additional time for voting in order to provide for the three consecutive hours. The additional time for voting is granted at the convenience of the employer.
No deduction in pay or any penalty will be imposed on an employee in order to provide the three consecutive hours to vote.
Example: if your normal workday begins at 2 p.m. you would not be eligible for paid time off since you had four hours prior to the start of your workday to vote; similarly, if your normal workday ends at 5 p.m., with voting stations closing at 8 p.m., you would have three uninterrupted hours in which to vote so you would not be eligible for paid time off.

Voter Eligibility

In order to vote you must be:

• at least 18 years old, 
• a Canadian citizen, and
• a resident of the City of Grande Prairie on Election Day.  

To determine if you are a City of Grande Prairie resident please review, Section 48 - Rules of Residence of the Local Authorities Election Act.

Note: You do not have to own property to vote. Property ownership is not a determining factor to vote, all citizens who meet the eligibility requirements above are eligible to vote.

Acceptable Identification

In order to vote, a voter must prove their identity and address. You can do this by:

1. If you are on the Elector Register, producing one piece of identification issued by a Canadian government (federal, provincial or local) or an agency of the government, that includes a photograph (ex. driver’s licence, motor vehicle operator’s licence); or
2. If you either aren’t on the Elector Register or do not have the above described ID, making a statement that you are eligible to vote in the presence of an officer at the voting station, on a provided form, and validate your identity and address by producing:
   1. One piece of identification issued by a Canadian government (federal, provincial or local) or an agency of the government, that includes a photograph, your name and your address;
   2. 1 pieces of identification authorized by the Chief Electoral Officer, that establishes your name and current address. To view a list of acceptable ID please visit elections.ab.ca.
   3. 1 piece of identification authorized by the Chief Electoral Officer, that establishes your name and another Elector, who is on the registered voter list, validates your address. (Please refer to vouching below).

Under Alberta's amended Local Authorities Elections Act, all municipalities are required to develop a Permanent Electors Register for the 2025 Municipal Election. This register is a comprehensive list of residents who are eligible to vote. It is compiled using information from voterlink.

Ensuring your voter registration information is up-to-date and accurate for provincial election events will also ensure accurate information is provided to the City to use when creating our Permanent Elector Registers.

Your privacy is important. Personal information collected for the Permanent Electors Register is protected under strict privacy laws and will be used for electoral purposes only.

A person may vouch for another person’s address by making a statement, in the prescribed form, to validate the person’s identity and verify their address.
An elector may not vouch for another person if any of the following apply:
a.    The elector has relied on vouching to validate their address;
b.    The elector has already vouched for another person (unless the persons being vouched for all live at the same address); or
c.    The elector’s name is not on the registered voter list.
A scrutineer shall not vouch for a person.

If you are unable to vote at an advance vote or at the voting station on election day, you may apply for a Special Ballot starting August 1, 2025 until October 9, 2025 at 4:30 p.m.

If you are issued a Special Ballot, the completed Special Ballot package must be received by the Returning Officer no later than 7 p.m. on Election Day, October 20, 2025.

Note: Ballots will be mailed to voters after close of nominations on Tuesday, September 23, 2025. 

Any voter who is unable to attend a voting station on Election Day or advance voting station because of physical disability may be able to have election workers attend at their home during the hours an advance voting station is open, in order to take their vote.
