As winter's chill approaches, the City of Grande Prairie is calling upon its residents to play a crucial role in nurturing their green spaces. The City is urging everyone to take proactive steps by ensuring that their private trees, shrubs and perennials receive the necessary hydration before the first snowfall.

“While cooler temperatures may be on the horizon, it is imperative to acknowledge that many of our urban green areas are still grappling with the aftermath of prolonged dry conditions,” said Parks Director Kase DeVries. “The lack of sufficient moisture in the soil can induce stress and harm to trees and other perennial plants, leaving them susceptible to the harsh cold and frost of winter.”

To empower our residents to make a positive impact, the City offers the following guidelines:

  1. Identify Your Plants: It's essential to understand the specific watering needs of different types of trees, shrubs, and perennials in your area. Some may require more water than others.
  2. Choose the Right Time: The most effective watering is done in the morning or late afternoon when temperatures are cooler. This reduces water loss through evaporation.
  3. Water Deeply: Apply water at the base of the plant to encourage deep root growth. A slow, deep soak is more effective than frequent, shallow watering.
  4. Mulch Around Plants: To retain moisture and regulate soil temperature, apply a layer of mulch around the base of trees and shrubs.
  5. Monitor Soil Moisture: Regularly check the soil's moisture level and water when it feels dry to the touch.

By following these practical guidelines and collectively taking action, residents can significantly contribute to the vitality and resilience of our city's urban forest. Healthy trees and shrubs not only withstand the winter season better but also enhance the overall quality of life for our community.
