The Grande Prairie Fire Department is proud to host a specialized training program for approximately 100 firefighters from across the region and province.
Over the next four days, residents of Grande Prairie will notice an influx of firefighters and fire experts in the city.
Firefighting professionals and subject matter experts from across North America, including British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Texas, and Arizona are providing the training.
Titled "Responding to the Interface," the training is meticulously curated to bolster the proficiency of firefighters as they confront wildfires that pose risks to communities. A significant focus of the course will be structural defence during a wildfire, ensuring that firefighters are well-equipped to protect both natural landscapes and urban environments.
This pioneering initiative is made possible through a collaborative funding effort between the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) and the Government of Canada.
"Northern Alberta's communities and firefighters have always joined hands during challenging times, with this program, we're excited to deepen our collaborative tradition,” said Mark VanWerkhoven, Deputy Fire Chief of the Grande Prairie Fire Department. “A special thanks goes to the IAFF for procuring the vital funds to make this remarkable training possible right here in Grande Prairie."
The training not only represents continual enhancements in regional firefighting capabilities but also emphasizes the importance of continued collaboration and education in ensuring the safety of our communities.
As wildfires pose an ever-increasing threat, such initiatives become vital in prepping our firefighters for the challenges ahead.
Media opportunities to attend practical components of the training are available the afternoon of Oct 6 and 7. Interested parties should contact Phil or Ian to confirm exact timing and location.
