Back to school 2023: prioritizing safety in Grande Prairie

(Grande Prairie, Alta. – August 31, 2023) – The City of Grande Prairie’s Enforcement Services reminds residents that school zones come back into effect starting Tuesday, September 5, 2023.

School zones are in effect from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on school days, with a speed limit of 30 km/h. Playgrounds remain in effect from 7:30 a.m. until one hour after sunset with a similar 30 km/h speed limit.

As the new school year starts, let's keep students safe and happy. Drivers are reminded to exercise additional caution around school zones, residential areas, playgrounds and other child-friendly spots. A further reminder that it is illegal to pass another vehicle that is moving in the same direction in either a school zone or playground zone during the times that these zones are in effect.

A few additional driving reminders to keep everyone safe during the school year:

  • Follow the 30 km/h speed limit in school and playground zones.
  • Slow down and always be ready for any stops.
  • Factor in extra time for your commute.
  • Stay attentive and alert at intersections and mid-block crosswalks.
  • Follow the lead of school safety patrols in their bright orange vests.
  • Be extra cautious when reversing from parking spots or driveways.
  • Keep eyes open for children between parked vehicles.

In the spirit of back-to-school safety, this September Grande Prairie Enforcement Services will be on the lookout for any vehicles not adhering to the parking guidelines in school zones. Parents, guardians and our older students are encouraged to take a moment to become familiar with the drop-off zones, no-parking areas and no-stopping zones. 

A few safety reminders for school zone parking:

  • Give a clear 5 meters space from crosswalks or intersections.
  • Respect the zones marked as "no parking" or "no stopping."
  • Keep sidewalks clear.
  • Always park on the side of the street that matches the pattern of traffic.

"I ask each of our residents to prioritize safety as our students return to school. Let's all be a part of ensuring that every student’s journey to and from school is safe and successful," said Mayor Jackie Clayton.
