1. Curriculum-Based Programs
Curriculum-based programs are based on the Alberta Education Programs of Study for social studies, science and health and life skills. Programs may be available in person (in your classroom or at a City facility) or virtually. With over 15 programs to choose from, there is a program available for every grade level. Each program is approximately 1 hour in duration, except for the following:
- Pioneer Experience and Guided Cooking programs (1.5 hours).
- Quality of Life Indicators tour (45 minutes).
For more information on the curriculum-based programs available, their cost and how to register, please see our Curriculum-Based Program Request Form.

Grade 1 - Creating Colour
Learn about how different colours are created, what happens when they are mixed and how they can be transferred from one material to another by exploring and learning about different colours in this kit. Students will learn how to distinguish between and describe colours while working with a variety of materials to create, modify and apply colours.
Grade 2 - Magnetism
Explore the integration of magnets within your own environment. Students will get the opportunity to test the effects of one magnet on another, learn that magnets show polarity and discover that magnetic strength diminishes with distance. Grab this kit to explore what affects materials do or don’t affect magnets and learn how magnets can be used in sorting objects, moving items and holding things together.
Grade 3 - Building with a Variety of Materials
Students use a variety of tools and simple techniques to build things for specific purposes. Their tasks may require that a bridge be built, a model lookout tower be constructed or a water container be made, all from available materials! Students will learn the value of safety, good workmanship and that different materials/designs can be used to obtain the same result.
Grade 4 - Wheels and Levers
Let’s get wheeling! Learn about how connectors, levers, gears, pulleys and band driven systems are used to assemble, operate and use simple machines. Explore different techniques of transferring motion from one component to another and discover the functions that each component can perform by sampling applications and ways to incorporate them into a larger system. Students will examine how these simple machines are used to change the speed of force of movement.
Grade 5 - Electricity and Magnetism
Take that knowledge from the previous topic and expand it by building various electrical devices! Students may be tasked with making a switch, lighting three bulbs from one source or creating a device to control motor speed. Working through these tasks will teach students the role of various components and control devices that are part of an electrical system while developing problem solving skills.
Grade 6 - Sky Science
Observe and research the sky! Expand your students' knowledge from a simple view of land and sky to recognizing the Earth as a sphere in motion within a larger universe. Students will be given the opportunity to explore and learn about the motions and characteristics of stars, moons and planets in our solar system. Revisit the topics of seasonal cycles, moon phases and the apparent motion of stars with the new understanding developed with this kit.
