Mayor Bill Given has spoken with Council and informed them that he plans to step down later this year to accept a position as the top administrator (Chief Administrative Officer) for the Municipality of Jasper. Formal notification has not yet been received by the City.

Council wish to thank Mayor Given for his contributions to the City of Grande Prairie over the past 19 years and especially the past 10 years as Mayor. “As an Alderman, Councillor and Mayor throughout the City’s largest period of growth, Bill’s legacy as a community builder who has set up the organization for continued success is something we are very appreciative of. All of Council wish Bill and Susan the best as they take on this new challenge.”

The Municipal Government Act and City Bylaws provide Council with guidance on how to operate when the Chief Elected Official steps down.  With the regular election less than a year away, Council will be discussing how best to fill the Mayor’s role over this short period of time once official notification has been received.

Recognizing the countless organizations and residents Mayor Given has worked with over the past two decades, the City will be compiling a digital book of well wishes for presentation. Please email mayor.message@cityofgp.com if you would like a message included. Messages will be received until the end of December.
