Here are the highlights for the City Council Meeting held October 19, 2020:

Delegations

Representatives from the Grande Spirit Foundation presented to City Council to share future plans of the land nearby and express concern of the Activity & Reception Centre site in the Smith neighbourhood.

Intermunicipal Collaboration Framework

The Intermunicipal Collaboration Framework (ICF) Committee provided a verbal update to City Council. The City of Grande Prairie has initiated the process to enter arbitration to establish an ICF agreement with the County.

Activity and Reception Centre

Grande Prairie City Council approved the Smith neighbourhood as the site for a future Activity and Reception Centre.

Business License Bylaw

City Council postponed the approval of the Business License Bylaw to November 16, 2020. During deliberations, Council approved additional amendments to the bylaw that require food trucks to have garbage cans and list the information the City may require from businesses applying for a Business License.

Commitment to Inclusion

City council approved the creation of an annual diversity and inclusion report to be shared with the community to provide a mechanism for accountability, transparency, and success stories.

Land-Use Rezoning to Accommodate Permanent Supported Housing

Council amended the Land Use Bylaw to allow for the development of Permanent Supported Housing with 44 units within the existing 6-storey building downtown.

Council gave two readings to amendments to the Land Use Bylaw that allow for the development of an approximately 40-unit Permanent Supported Housing development in the Avondale neighbourhood that would provide professional on-site care and supervision for residents requiring such assistance. Council did not hold third reading; the item will come back to the next Council meeting. Council directed administration to begin design on an additional location in Westgate and bring forward a report comparing the two sites.
