In response to the ongoing health workforce challenges, Grande Prairie City Council approved the Health Care Attraction and Retention Strategy during the Council meeting held on Monday, June 17.

The Strategy focuses on three key areas: information, incentives, and infrastructure. By actively promoting local opportunities, supporting initiatives to raise awareness of health care careers, and offering meaningful incentives, Grande Prairie aims to attract new health care workers, including physicians and specialists to the area.

"The Health Care Attraction and Retention Strategy is an essential step in addressing our health care needs and ensuring that Grande Prairie remains a thriving, healthy community," said Grande Prairie Mayor, Jackie Clayton. "This strategy highlights our commitment to support our local health care workforce and aligns with Council's priorities of economic readiness and quality of life."

The Strategy also focuses on long-term retention by integrating new health care professionals into the community and providing them with the necessary support and incentives to build their careers locally.

“The Health Care Attraction and Retention Strategy by Grande Prairie City Council is an important initiative for attracting and retaining top health care professionals,” said Candice Edey, Senior Operating Officer, Alberta Health Services. “By offering strong support, it ensures that our health care workers can build fulfilling careers and thrive in our community."

With a median age of 34 and a higher number of residents under 10 than over 60, the City and region are expected to grow faster than the provincial average of 1.5 per cent. To support this diverse and expanding population, a wide range of health care services is crucial.
