The City of Grande Prairie is launching a new one-day event called GirlZone on September 10 to help encourage gender equality in sport and recreation.
GirlZone is an activity-based day for girls ages 10 to 15 to encourage them to try new skills with their peers under the guidance of instructors.
“Recreation and sport activities have a lasting positive impact on both physical and mental health,” says Hayley Kramps, Programming and Events Supervisor at the City of Grande Prairie. “Recent trends suggest there is a decreased participation rate of girls in recreation and sport activities since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. GirlZone is a way for the City to create a barrier and judgement-free environment for girls to explore new activities they otherwise wouldn’t have tried.”
The event takes place across multiple facilities from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and allows participants to try out the following activities in 40-minute sessions:
- Introduction to Fitness class at the Eastlink Centre
- Bike skills with Nitehawk at South Bear Creek Park
- Parkour at APE Parkour
- Cooking with Alberta Health Services at the Eastlink Centre
- Beach volleyball at The Sand Zone
- Soccer with Swan City Football Club at the indoor soccer pitch
Activities also include a presentation from a motivational speaker about various topics during the lunch break.
Lunch is provided and the price is included in the program fee.
The registration cost is $20. Pre-register today by visiting cityofgp.com/programs.
