Snow Clearing Updates for December 14 to 18, 2020

Snow Clearing Updates for December 14 to 18, 2020

There are two main ways the City runs snow plowing and ice control operations:

Priority Road Plowing and Ice Control
  • Occurs continuously throughout the winter in response to changing weather conditions.
  • The goal is to plow arterial (priority 1) and secondary (priority 2) roads to maintain clear access for emergency vehicles and general commuters.
  • Includes ice control operations such as sanding and salting, as well as windrow pick-up.
Residential Snow Clearing
  • Occurs in two-week rotations only when triggered by the City.
  • If a neighbourhood is not complete in week one, crews will return in week two.
  • Operated Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • The City hires contracted crews to plow residential roads.

December 17, 2020:

  • All priority roads are being plowed, sanded, and salted.
  • The City's trail network is being plowed and sanded.
  • Prior to the most recent snowfall, crews had completed plowing in residential areas.
  • Parking bans are declared on all priority 1 and 2 roads, except downtown, starting Friday, December 18.
    • During a parking ban, residents are not permitted to park on identified roads on Monday-Friday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. This is to provide crews with adequate space to operate equipment and clear the road safely.
    • Priority 1 and 2 roads are main roads and collector roads, priority 2 routes are identified by on-street signage. All priority roads may be viewed on the map in the 2020-2021 Snow Clearing Brochure.

  • Crews continue to plow priority 3 routes.
  • Crews are patrolling all priority routes and the trail network to sand/salt icy areas as needed.

December 15, 2020:

  • City crews are in Tuesday areas to clean up any areas missed last week. The neighbourhoods include Southview, Patterson Place, South Patterson Place, Country Club West, Country Club Estates, Countryside North and South, and Signature Falls.

About Snow Storage in Residential Areas:

  • When plowing in residential areas, snow is either:
    • Windrowed and stored on the side of the road
    • Pushed past the curb, windrowed, and stored on the City boulevard
    • Piled and stored in the centre of a cul-de-sac.
  • Storing snow in these three ways may result in narrower roads and loss of on-street parking in some neighbourhoods.
  • Hauling snow from residential areas occurs after all other snow clearing activities have occurred. It is a low priority service and does not have a service standard outlined in the snow and ice control policy. There is no dedicated crews or equipment assigned to this task, to ensure crews are available to respond to changing weather and roads where traffic is heaviest (priority 1 and 2 routes).
  • City and contracted crews clear windrows in front of driveways but will not clear windrows to facilitate on-street parking.

December 14, 2020:

  • City crews are in Monday areas to clean up any areas missed last week due to vehicles in the roadway. The neighbourhoods include VLA/Montrose, Hillside, Ivy Lake Estates, Crystal Heights, Mountview, Summit, and Crystal Landing.
  • Crews have completed plowing priority 2 routes and are working on priority 3 routes.
  • Crews are patrolling all priority routes and the trail network to sand/salt icy areas as needed.
