Snow clearing update for the week of January 12 to 16

There are two main ways the City runs snow plowing and ice control operations:

Priority Road Plowing and Ice Control
  • Occurs continuously throughout the winter in response to changing weather conditions.
  • The goal is to plow arterial (priority 1) and secondary (priority 2) roads to maintain clear access for emergency vehicles and general commuters.
  • Includes ice control operations such as sanding and salting, as well as windrow pick-up.
Residential Snow Clearing
  • Occurs in two-week rotations only when triggered by the City.
  • If a neighbourhood is not complete in week one, crews will return in week two.
  • Operated Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • The City hires contracted crews to plow residential roads.

Thursday

Kensington, Mission Heights, O’Brien Lake and Stone Ridge.

Pinnacle Ridge and Westpointe.

Friday

Arbour Hills, Gateway, Northridge, Royal Oaks and Westgate.

Lakeland, Easthaven, Crystal Ridge, Copperwood, and Crystal Lake Estates.

Parking bans remain in effect on Priority 1 and 2 routes, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

January 16

Residential snow clearing continues in Lakeland today, with potential touch-ups in Crystal Lake Estates as needed.

Residents in these areas are asked to move their vehicles off the street from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. day to support operations.

Select Week A areas requiring additional touch-ups will also be addressed today, if time permits.

Today’s work completes the residential clearing rotation that began December 29. Crews will continue maintaining Priority 2 roads, clearing snow storage such as cul-de-sac piles and responding to localized issues in residential areas as conditions require.

Today’s operations also include:

  • Priority roads and windrows: Windrow removal is underway on 102 Street this morning, with crews moving to Priority 2 roads in Avondale later today.
  • Back lanes: Crews are clearing back lanes in Lakeland and Avondale, then moving into Mission if time and conditions allow.
  • Snow storage: Cul-de-sac pile removal continues in Patterson Place.
  • Facilities: Snow pile removal continues in City facility parking lots.
  • Ice control: Sanding trucks are deployed across the city, responding to slippery sections as needed.
  • Water control: Crews continue opening blocked drains and improving water flow in catch basins.

Snowmelt and localized flooding

With warmer weather expected this weekend, crews continue clearing catch basins and improving drainage in lanes and low-lying areas to help move meltwater into the storm system and reduce localized pooling.

Some pooling is expected during active snowmelt as drains catch up. Crews will continue monitoring conditions and responding where support is needed.

Please report concerns only when water is not draining and is approaching buildings or creating a safety issue.

Ongoing updates

With the two-week residential clearing rotation now complete, snow updates will be shared as needed until the next snow event.

The City will continue providing updates on priority road clearing, water and flooding control and ice control as conditions require.

Residential snow clearing this week is focused on areas that were not fully completed on their scheduled day due to heavy snow volumes, as well as locations that received additional snowfall after their last service.

Residential snow clearing continues as follows:

  • Today – Pinnacle Ridge, Westpointe and Kensington and, if time and resources permit, select areas of Mission Heights, O’Brien Lake and Stone Ridge.
  • Tomorrow – Lakeland and Crystal Lake Estates.

Any areas not reached on this week’s tentative schedule will be addressed next week, if needed.

Residents in these areas are asked to move their vehicles off the street from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on their scheduled day to support operations.

  • Priority roads and windrows: Crews continue blading Priority 2 routes in Royal Oaks and clearing windrows.
  • Back lanes: Crews are clearing back lanes in Highland Park and Lakeland.
  • Snow storage: Cul-de-sac pile removal underway in Patterson Place.
  • Facilities: Crews continue removing snow piles and applying sand in City facility parking lots.
  • Water control: Crews are working to open blocked drains and improve water flow in areas affected by snowmelt.

Snowmelt and localized flooding

With daytime temperatures remaining above zero, crews are responding to increased snowmelt across the city.

Water and vacuum trucks are working to open blocked drains, clear catch basins and improve water flow in lanes and low-lying areas. This helps move meltwater into the storm system and reduce localized pooling.

Some pooling is expected during active snowmelt as drains catch up. Crews continue to monitor conditions and respond where support is needed.

Residential snow clearing this week is focused on areas that were not fully completed on their scheduled day due to heavy snow volumes, as well as locations that received additional snowfall after their last service.

Residential snow clearing continues as follows:

  • Today – Lakeshore Drive and, if time and resources permit, select areas of Avondale, College Park and Swanavon.
  • Thursday, January 15 – Pinnacle Ridge (including back lanes), Westpointe and Kensington and, if time and resources permit, select areas of Mission Heights, O’Brien Lake and Stone Ridge.

Any areas not reached on this week’s tentative schedule will be addressed next week, if needed.

Residents in these areas are asked to move their vehicles off the street from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on their scheduled day to support operations.

Today’s operations also include

  • Priority roads: Blading Priority 2 routes in Royal Oaks.
  • Windrows and lanes: Windrow removal is underway in Hillside, Highland Park and Crystal Ridge Road. Back lane clearing is taking place in Pinnacle and Westpointe. Gravel lanes are being addressed in other areas based on conditions and citywide operational priorities.
  • Snow storage: Cul-de-sac pile removal underway in VLA.
  • Ice control: Sanding crews patrolling for slippery sections.
  • Facilities: Clearing snow piles and re-blading select facility parking lots.

Snowmelt and localized flooding

With the ongoing freeze–thaw cycle, crews are responding to increased snowmelt across the city. Today, water and vacuum trucks are responding to localized flooding concerns and working in downtown lanes to clear blocked drains and manage meltwater.

Some pooling is expected during rapid snowmelt as storm drains catch up. Crews are monitoring conditions citywide and responding where support is needed.

Report concerns only when water is not draining and is approaching buildings or is creating a safety issue — brief pooling during snowmelt is normal.

This week, residential snow clearing is focused on addressing areas that were not fully completed on their scheduled day due to heavy snow volumes, as well as locations that received additional snowfall after their last service.

Residential snow clearing continues today and tomorrow as follows:

  • Today – Tuesday, Week B: Countryside North, Countryside South, Country Club West, Country Club Estates and Signature Falls.
  • Tomorrow – Wednesday, January 14: Crews will be clearing Lakeshore Drive, and if time and resources permit, will continue into select areas of Avondale, College Park and Swanavon.

Targeted work in those select Week A locations will take place as time and resources allow.

Any areas not reached on this week’s tentative schedule will be addressed next week, if needed.

Managing snowmelt and localized flooding

With unseasonably warm temperatures and a heavy snowpack, crews are also using water trucks to help manage rapid snowmelt across the city. These trucks are being deployed to clear blocked drains, break up ice and help move meltwater away from roads, sidewalks and nearby properties to reduce pooling and localized flooding.

During periods of rapid snowmelt, some pooling is expected as storm drains catch up. Not all standing water indicates a flooding issue. Crews are monitoring conditions citywide and responding to service requests where possible.

Today’s snow clearing operations also include:

  • Priority roads: Crews are blading in Mission Heights and taking care of a few focus areas in Pinnacle.
  • Windrows: Snow blowing crews are removing windrows in the Highland Park area.
  • Snow storage: Cul-de-sac pile removal continues in Lakeland.
  •  Ice control: Sanding crews are patrolling the city, sanding and plowing as needed.
  •  Facilities: Crews are blading and clearing snow piles at facility parking lots.

January 12

This week, residential snow clearing is focused on addressing areas that were not fully completed on their scheduled day due to heavy snow volumes, as well as addressing locations that received significant snowfall after their last service.

Crews are working in Monday Week A areas today because the Week B Monday locations were fully completed and have not received additional snowfall.

Beginning Tuesday, January 13, crews will shift their primary focus to Week B areas that were not fully completed as scheduled last week due to heavy snow volumes.

Targeted work in select Week A locations will take place as time and resources allow (noted in brackets below). 

Where operationally practical, crews will follow the regular day-of-week pattern, with a notable exception:

  • Lakeshore Drive will receive service on Wednesday, January 15, instead of its usual Friday schedule.

Please note that some changes have been made since the initial schedule shared on Friday, January 9.

The updated schedule is as follow and subject to change based on condition and weather: 

  • Monday, January 12: Hillside, Mountview and VLA/Montrose
  • Tuesday, January 13: Countryside North, Countryside South, Country Club West, Country Club Estates and Signature Falls
  • Wednesday, January 14: Lakeshore Drive (Avondale, College Park and Swanavon)
  • Thursday, January 15: Pinnacle Ridge (including back lanes), Westpointe and Kensington (Mission Heights, O’Brien Lake and Stone Ridge)
  • Friday, January 16: Lakeland and Crystal Lake Estates

Residents in these areas are asked to move their vehicles off the street 8 a.m.- 5 p.m. the day their neighbourhood is scheduled to help crews complete the work.

Any areas not reached on this week’s tentative schedule will be addressed next week, if needed.

Today’s snow clearing operations also include:

  • Priority roads: Crews are blading 94 Avenue from 100 Street to Resources Road.
  • Windrows: Snow blowing crews are removing windrows on 112 Avenue in Crystal Heights and on Landing Drive. Crews will also follow blade crews clearing windrows on 94 Avenue between 100 Street and Resources Road.
  • Snow storage: Cul-de-sac pile removal continues into Lakeland, starting on 95 Street.
  • Ice control: Crews are patrolling and clearing slush and soft snow buildup on Priority 1 routes.
  • Facilities: Crews continue snow clearing at City-owned parking lots.
