Snow clearing update, December 2-6

There are two main ways the City runs snow plowing and ice control operations:

Priority Road Plowing and Ice Control
  • Occurs continuously throughout the winter in response to changing weather conditions.
  • The goal is to plow arterial (priority 1) and secondary (priority 2) roads to maintain clear access for emergency vehicles and general commuters.
  • Includes ice control operations such as sanding and salting, as well as windrow pick-up.
Residential Snow Clearing
  • Occurs in two-week rotations only when triggered by the City.
  • If a neighbourhood is not complete in week one, crews will return in week two.
  • Operated Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • The City hires contracted crews to plow residential roads.

Lakeland, Easthaven, Crystal Ridge, Copperwood, and Crystal Lake Estates.

December 6:

  • Residential clearing is happening today in Friday “Week B” neighbourhoods: Lakeland, Crystal Ridge, Copperwood and Crystal Lake Estates.
  • Crews are actively sanding Priority roads for ice control.
  • Blading and snow blowing is underway on Priority 2 roads in Patterson and Country Club.
  • Crews continue to clear City facility parking lots.

Residential snow clearing crews will return to “Week A” neighbourhoods next week, working on a day-by-day basis rather than following a full two-week rotation. This approach allows crews to address areas affected by fresh snowfalls after the rotation began. 

Cleanup in “Week B” neighbourhoods that weren’t completed will also resume next week, though it may not follow the usual schedule. Residents are encouraged to move vehicles if they see equipment in their area. Crews will provide at least one day’s notice and display temporary parking ban notices whenever possible.

Permanent snow route parking bans are active. These bans mean no parking is allowed on Priority 1 and 2 routes from Monday to Friday, between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m., until the ban is lifted.

December 5:

Yesterday’s residential snow clearing in Wednesday “Week B” neighbourhoods was not fully completed due to volume. An update will be provided detailing when crews will return to complete the work.

Daily Update:

  • Residential clearing is happening today in Thursday “Week B” neighbourhoods: Pinnacle Ridge and Westpointe.
  • Crews are actively sanding Priority 1 routes for ice control.
  • Blading is underway in Mission Heights, Pinnacle and Westpoint today while crews are removing windrows in Mission Heights.
  • Crews are clearing parking lots at the Library, Eastlink Centre and the City Service Centre.

Residential snow clearing has been initiated. Temporary parking restrictions will be in place tomorrow, December 6, for Friday “Week B” neighbourhoods: Lakeland, Crystal Ridge, Copperwood, and Crystal Lake Estates.

Permanent snow route parking bans are active. These bans mean no parking is allowed on Priority 1 and 2 routes from Monday to Friday, between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m., until the ban is lifted.

December 4:

Due to heavy snow and challenging conditions, yesterday’s residential snow clearing in Tuesday “Week B” neighbourhoods was not finished. Crews will return on Monday, December 9, to complete the work.

Daily Update:

  • Residential clearing is happening today in Wednesday “Week B” neighbourhoods: Cobblestone, Fieldbrook, Highland Park, Riverstone and Smith.
  • Crews are working on Priority 1 routes, focusing on 100 Street from 116 Avenue to 68 Avenue.
  • Blading and windrow removal is underway in Avondale, Highland Park and Copperwood.
  • Plows and sanding trucks are working on Priority 1 routes after yesterday’s snow and freezing rain.
  • Crews are clearing parking lots at Towne Centre Mall, the Farmer’s Market, and the Courthouse.

December 3:

Considering the warmer temperatures expected today, water trucks will be out controlling drainage.  

Daily Update:

  • Residential clearing is occurring throughout the day in Tuesday, “Week B” neighbourhoods: Country Club Estates, Countryside North and South, Signature Falls and Country Club West.
  • Crews are clearing Priority 2 (collector) routes in Crystal Landing, Crystal Ridge, and Priority 2 service roads on the west and north ends of the city. 
  • Windrow removal is underway by City Hall, on 100 Avenue and in Crystal Landing and Crystal Ridge. 
  • Plow trucks are patrolling and sanding where needed.
  • Parking lot maintenance is underway at the RCMP building, RCMP overflow lot, the Activity and Reception Centre (ARC) and the SPCA.

Permanent snow route parking bans are active. The ban restricts parking on permanent snow routes (priority 1 and 2 routes) from Monday to Friday between 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. until the ban is lifted.

December 2:

Freezing rain has been forecasted for the Grande Prairie region today. Please drive for the conditions, give yourself time and remember to give clearing and sanding equipment plenty of space (at least three car lengths) to protect your vehicle.

  • Blading and snow blowing crews are working on 102 Avenue before moving onto 108 Avenue focusing on clearing and windrow removal.
  • Sanding plows are patrolling Priority 1 and 2 roads as well as outskirt areas. 
  • Parking lot maintenance is underway at City Hall, Firehalls and Eastlink Centre.
