Avian influenza confirmed in wild birds – what residents need to know

The City of Grande Prairie has received confirmation that avian influenza (bird flu) is present in some wild birds within city limits.

While the risk to people and pets is very low, it’s important that residents do not touch or try to move dead or sick birds.

If you see a dead bird:

  1. Do not handle it.
  2. Call 311 to report the location so City staff can safely collect it.
  3. Keep pets away from affected birds or areas where birds have died.

City staff are following established safety procedures and are coordinating with Alberta Fish and Wildlife and  Alberta Health Services.
