(Grande Prairie, Alta. – October 30, 2025) – The City of Grande Prairie, through Invest Grande Prairie, has launched the Fibre Gap Analysis Project in partnership with the Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA) to better understand local internet service levels and identify areas for improvement.

“The Fibre Gap Analysis Project reflects our commitment to understanding local service needs and ensuring Grande Prairie remains well-connected for the future,” says Mayor Jackie Clayton. “We encourage all our local residents and businesses to take part in the quick online test to support reliable, high-quality internet which is essential to support our growing community, attract new investment and enable innovation.”

Working with CIRA’s Internet Performance Test program, the project will collect real-world data on internet speed, reliability and consistency across the city.

The information will help the City:

  • Improve planning – Identify areas with slower or less reliable service and guide future broadband development.
  • Strengthen grant applications – Support funding requests with accurate, community-sourced performance data.
  • Boost economic readiness – Ensure local infrastructure can support business growth, attract new investment and enable innovation across all sectors.
  • Increase transparency – Track broadband improvements over time and compare local results with provincial and national averages.

Online Testing for Residents

To support this work, Invest Grande Prairie is inviting all residents and businesses to complete a quick online test that measures internet speed and reliability at their location.

The test takes about one minute and can be done on any device connected to the internet. Each result adds to a community-wide map that will help the City identify where improvements are needed most and strengthen efforts to expand broadband services across Grande Prairie.

More information about the Fibre Gap Analysis Project and how to participate in the CIRA Internet Performance Test is available at engage.cityofgp.com. The test is available until September 2026.

Background

In 2024, Invest Grande Prairie began work to improve broadband connectivity and support economic growth. The City gathered input from broadband providers through a Request for Expression of Interest, followed by a Broadband Analysis completed in early 2025 to map service levels and identify opportunities for policy and infrastructure improvements. During this work, Council implemented the Fibre Optics Fee Rebate Program to encourage private-sector investment and accelerate fibre network expansion across Grande Prairie.
