Camper FAQ's

• What is Camp F.I.R.E?

  Camp F.I.R.E. is a hands-on firefighting and emergency services camp designed to introduce young women and gender-diverse youth to the fire service. The camp focuses on building confidence while developing teamwork, leadership and practical skills in a supportive environment.

• Who can attend Camp F.I.R.E?

  Camp F.I.R.E. is open to participants aged 16 to 20 who identify as women or gender-diverse youth. No previous firefighting or emergency services experience is required.

• Is prior physical fitness or athletic experience needed?

  No. Participants of all fitness levels are welcome. Instructors provide coaching throughout each activity, with safety as a top priority. A willingness to try new challenges is more important than prior fitness experience. The camp is active and hands on, with moderate physical activity throughout the day, and tasks are adapted to each participant’s comfort level and ability.

• Do participants need their own gear?

  No. All personal protective equipment (PPE) and station wear are provided for each day of the camp.

• Is the camp safe?

  Yes. All activities follow strict NFPA safety standards and are supervised by firefighters, certified instructors and medical staff. Live fire evolutions take place in controlled training environments with extensive safety measures in place.

• How are participants selected?

  Participants are selected through an online application process that mirrors a fire department application.

• What is the cost, and are scholarships available?

  There is no cost to participate in Camp F.I.R.E. Scholarships are not available at this time, but the Camp F.I.R.E. committee is working toward offering this opportunity in the future.

• Will participants be exposed to real fire?

  Yes. Live fire training takes place under controlled conditions on Day 3 in a certified training building. All activities are supervised by qualified instructors, and participants wear full protective gear at all times.

   

• What will participants learn?

  Participants will gain hands-on experience with real-world fire service skills, including hose handling, search and rescue, rappelling, extrication, fire behaviour, first aid, fitness, teamwork, leadership and problem solving.
