The City of Grande Prairie is helping residents identify opportunities to improve energy efficiency at home through its Home Energy Check Kit, which provides free access to specialized tools that can help households better understand their energy use, improve comfort and potentially reduce utility costs.
The kit includes equipment that residents may not typically have on hand, allowing them to explore areas of their homes where energy may be wasted without having to purchase specialized tools.
“We want Grande Prairie to be a community where residents have the resources and opportunities to make choices that improve their quality of life,” said City of Grande Prairie Mayor, Jackie Clayton. “The Home Energy Check Kit is a practical way to support households in understanding their energy use and finding opportunities to make their homes more comfortable and affordable.”
Through seven guided activities, residents can explore common areas of home energy use and efficiency, including heating and ventilation, windows and doors, insulation, indoor air quality, moisture, lighting, water use and appliances.
Using tools such as an infrared thermometer, plug-in energy meter and air quality detector, residents can check for potential heat loss, measure electricity use and better understand conditions within their homes.
The kit also includes worksheets to help residents record their findings and develop a home efficiency plan based on areas that may need attention.
Borrowing a Home Energy Check Kit
The City has six Home Energy Check Kits available for residents to borrow for up to two weeks.
Residents interested in borrowing a kit must submit an online request in advance. Once a kit becomes available, the AccessGP team will contact them directly with pickup instructions. Kits are available for pickup exclusively at the AccessGP counter at City Service Centre, located at 9505 112 Street, where residents will complete a borrowing form.
Borrowers must be 18 years of age or older.
By providing access to specialized equipment and information, the program helps residents identify opportunities to make their homes more energy-efficient without the upfront expense of purchasing the tools themselves.
Residents who prefer to use their own tools can also download the Home Energy Check Kit guide to complete the activities independently.
