2026 Canadian Wrestling Championships
Council endorse a contribution of $40,000 from the Grande Prairie Sport Hosting Society to the Grande Prairie Wrestling Club, representing a legacy investment from the 2026 Canadian Wrestling Championships.
One of the objectives of hosting the Canadian Wrestling Championships was to create a legacy for the local wrestling community. The $40K will support the purchase of wrestling mats and strengthen the Club's capacity to deliver programming, athlete development opportunities, and future events in Grande Prairie. This investment aligns with one of the key legacy objectives and ensures that a substantial portion of the benefits generated through hosting the Championships remain within the local sport community.
Forest Resource Improvement Association of Alberta Non-Vegetative Grant Approval - Update Wildfire Mitigation Strategy
Council supported the FRIAA (Forest Resource Improvement Association of Alberta) grant application to update the 2019 Wildfire Mitigation Strategy.
The FRIAA-funded grant application represents a significant expansion of previous wildfire mitigation work by completing a city-wide Wildfire Hazard and Risk Assessment and Wildfire Mitigation Strategy across the entire municipal boundary. Building on lessons learned from the 2019 strategy, subsequent vegetation management initiatives, fireguard construction, and home assessment programs, the project will establish a sustainable 10-year wildfire risk reduction and vegetation management framework.
Policy 606 – Snow and Ice Control Amendments
Council approved amendments to Policy 606 - Snow and Ice Control.
Council referred the rear laneway service level increase to the 2027 budget deliberations.
The amendments include updates to revise snow-storage practices in dual-sidewalk areas, rebalance the Week A/Week B residential schedule, and update the applicable schedules, while retaining the current service level for downtown disabled parking, and housekeeping measures that address administrative language changes within Policy 606.
The amendments to Policy 606 reflect operational experience and are intended to improve the efficiency, reliability and clarity of the City’s snow and ice control program.
