Community sandbox open for winter season

The City of Grande Prairie's free community sandbox is open for the 2026-27 winter season, providing residents with easy access to sand to improve traction on icy sidewalks and driveways.

Located on the west side of the City Service Centre (9505 112 Street), near the south end of 112 Street and outside the facility gates, the sandbox is available for residents to collect up to two five-gallon containers of sand per visit for personal use.

Residents are encouraged to use the sand on sidewalks and driveways to help reduce the risk of slips and falls during icy conditions.

The community sandbox was introduced following the 2022 Snow and Ice Service Review in response to resident feedback requesting easier access to sand for winter traction.

A few things to know before you go:

  • Bring your own shovel and buckets.
  • Take only what you need, up to two five-gallon containers per visit.
  • Sand is available on a first-come, first-served basis. The sandbox is replenished throughout the season, but may not always be full.
  • No salt is intentionally added to the sand, although trace amounts of salt or other impurities may be present.
