(Grande Prairie, Alta. – August 28, 2026) – FireSmart™ vegetation management work has resumed along the Bear Creek Corridor as the City of Grande Prairie continues efforts to reduce wildfire risk and strengthen community safety.

Work is currently underway behind residences in Mission Heights and Grande Banks and is expected to continue in these areas over the next couple of months. Work will then progress north along the corridor, with additional updates shared as it moves into new areas.

Vegetation management is focused on higher-risk areas along the corridor and includes removing dead or downed woody vegetation, pruning lower tree limbs, clearing firefighter access points and chipping or removing material where needed. The work helps reduce flammable materials, improve defensible space and support firefighter access.

All activities follow FireSmart™ guidelines and environmental best practices to support a healthy and resilient forest structure.

What residents can expect

Residents may notice additional workers, equipment and signage in the area. Trails remain open but will also be used to access work areas and remove debris.

Residents are asked to avoid active work zones and follow posted signage while work is underway.

Project Funding

The current work is funded through the Intact Municipal Climate Resiliency Grant and is part of the City’s ongoing FireSmart™ efforts in the Bear Creek area.

The City began FireSmart™ vegetation management in the area in 2024 with funding from the Forest Resource Improvement Association of Alberta (FRIAA). Together, these projects support longer-term efforts to reduce wildfire risk and improve community resilience.
