As of Friday, April 19, 2024 the gravel roads ban has been updated to be in effect at 75% axle weight 24 hours a day on all gravel roads.


The City of Grande Prairie begins gravel road bans on Friday, March 15, 2024 restricting travel on all gravel roads within City limits.

All gravel roads will be at 75% axle weight between the hours of 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Gravel road bans are a standard practice for the City, aimed at protecting gravel roads in the region. The City of Grande Prairie may issue road bans during construction, regular maintenance, or due to special seasonal circumstances such as spring melt or above-average weather conditions.

The list of affected roads are as follows:

  • RR 71 – 0.5 miles south of Highway 43; 0.5 miles north of Highway 43; 0.5 miles north of Township Road 715
  • RR 70 – 0.5 miles south of Highway 43; 5 miles north of Highway 43
  • TWP RD 715 – Range Road 70 to Range Road 71
  • TWP RD 715A – Range Road 70 to Range Road 65 ; Range Road 64 to 116 Street
  • TWP RD 721 – Range Road 70 to 0.5 miles west of Range Road 71
  • TWP RD 722 – Range Road 70 to 0.5 miles east of Range Road 64
  • RR 65 – 0.25 mile south of Township Road 715A to 1.25 miles north of Township Road 720; Township Road 722 north 1 mile
  • RR 64 (124 Street) – 0.25 miles south of Township Road 715A to 1.5 miles north of Township Road 720; 0.75 miles north of Township Road 712A
  • TWP RD 720 – Range Road 65 to 116 Street
  • 108 Street – 0.5 miles north of 132 Avenue
  • 92 Street – 132 Avenue to 141 Avenue
  • RR 55 – 132 Avenue north 1 mile
  • RR 54 (76 Street) – Highway 670 north 1 mile
  • RR 53 (68 Street) – 1 mile north of Highway 670; 0.5 miles south of Highway 670

“We appreciate the cooperation of the public as we limit the weight capacity of these roads.  It is critical that we make these adjustments during the spring thaw to preserve the structural integrity of our gravel road network,” said Wade Nellis, City of Grande Prairie’s Director of Transportation Services.
