The City of Grande Prairie is actively monitoring for potholes and completing maintenance to ensure streets remain safe and accessible for all users during the warmer temperatures and the freeze-thaw cycle.
Managing Snowmelt and Drainage
As snow and ice melt, water runoff may collect temporarily before flowing into the City’s drainage systems, which include storm drains, catch basins and culverts.
City crews are regularly monitoring drainage systems, clearing debris from catch basins and culverts, and deploying water trucks to address pooling where necessary. These measures help to ensure proper water flow and prevent blockages caused by ice or snow.
Proactive Winter Pothole Repairs
City crews are also monitoring road conditions to identify and address potholes as they emerge. Repairs are prioritized based on severity, with crews employing various techniques to ensure roads remain safe and functional for all users:
- Cold mix patching provides immediate repairs during colder weather to address urgent concerns.
- Hot recycled asphalt is used during extended warmer periods for higher-quality, more durable repairs.
- Infrared heater repairs deliver long-lasting results by heating the road surface to create seamless repairs.
“Our crews are dedicated to maintaining safe and functional roads during the challenges of winter transitions,” says Director of Transportation and Engineering, Wade Nellis. “We’re focused on addressing these issues efficiently and effectively to minimize impacts on the community.”
By combining frequent patrols with responsive repair techniques, the City ensures roads are maintained throughout the winter thaw.
How to Report Potholes and Flooding Concerns:
Report issues through the City’s online portal at access.cityofgp.com or by visiting cityofgp.com/road-maintenance.
Alternatively, reports can also be made via email at info@cityofgp.com.
When reporting, include the pothole’s location (such as the side of the road) and its size. Potholes described as large, deep or hazardous will be prioritized for immediate attention.
The City thanks residents for helping ensure Grande Prairie’s roads remain safe and functional through the winter thaw.
