The Grande Prairie Fire Department’s free Camp F.I.R.E. (Fostering Independence, Resilience & Empowerment) initiative returns May 2 to 4 for young women and gender-diverse individuals aged 16 to 20.
Camp F.I.R.E. gives participants a unique opportunity to engage in hands-on specialized educational activities, including Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) mastery, search and rescue operations, confined space strategy and more.
This camp is dedicated to breaking down barriers and fostering a supportive environment that cultivates leadership, teamwork and problem-solving skills while empowering participants to explore a career in emergency and fire services.
The initiative was a resounding success in 2024, with a full cohort of 15 individuals and support from various community sponsors.
“We’re excited to offer Camp F.I.R.E. to our region for the second year in a row,” said Grande Prairie Fire Chief, Mark VanWerkhoven. “Only 12 per cent of firefighters across Canada are women, so initiatives like Camp F.I.R.E. are an important way for us to help break down barriers and create more opportunities to introduce young women to the fire services profession.”
Camp F.I.R.E. is fully funded through awarded grants and the generosity of sponsors.
