The City of Grande Prairie and Grande Prairie Police Commission are pleased to extend an invitation to the public for the swearing-in ceremony of Chief Dwayne Lakusta, the inaugural Chief of Police for the newly established Grande Prairie Police Service.

Before they can commence their duties, a Chief of Police must take an Oath of Allegiance and Office, swearing to fulfill their role diligently, faithfully, and to the best of their ability. This ceremony is an opportunity to celebrate this occasion with the public.

The event takes place in the Teresa Sargent Hall at the Montrose Cultural Centre on April 19, 2024 at 2 p.m. and will be attended by distinguished dignitaries from across the province. Limited seats are available for the public. The ceremony will be livestreamed on the City of Grande Prairie Facebook page for those unable to attend in person.

Dwayne Lakusta assumed the role of Chief of Police on August 28, 2023, making history as the first chief of the Grande Prairie Police Service, the first Alberta municipal police service to be established since 1956. With nearly three decades of progressive law enforcement experience, Chief Lakusta brings a wealth of knowledge and leadership to his new role.

“We are honoured to have Chief Lakusta lead the Grande Prairie Police Service. His extensive experience and commitment to public safety make him the ideal candidate to guide our law enforcement efforts and we are excited to mark his swearing in," says Grande Prairie Police Commission Chair Dan Wong.

“Chief Lakusta's dedication to the community and his proven track record make him an excellent choice for the position of Chief of Police,” says City of Grande Prairie Mayor Jackie Clayton. “We look forward to the positive impact he will have on the safety and well-being of our residents."

There will be an opportunity for attendees to meet Chief Lakusta following the ceremony.
