The City of Grande Prairie’s Youth Advisory Council (YAC) is seeking passionate young individuals eager to make a difference in their community. With the application deadline approaching on October 15, 2024, now is the time for youth aged 14 to 24 who have been considering joining to submit their applications.

YAC offers a unique platform for youth aged 14 to 24 to engage with City Council, local agencies, and community groups on a variety of issues. It’s an opportunity for high school students, college students, and young professionals to collaborate, learn, and influence positive change in Grande Prairie. YAC provides members with a voice in shaping the future of the community, with opportunities to participate in city initiatives and contribute to local policy discussions.

“The Youth Advisory Council is an essential part of our city’s growth and future,” said Mayor Jackie Clayton. “It’s inspiring to see the energy, passion, and fresh ideas these young leaders bring to the table. Their input is invaluable as we work to build a community where futures are grander for all our residents.”

Each year, YAC members take on critical advisory roles, offering input on issues ranging from food security and transit to snow removal and more. Recent YAC contributions have had a tangible impact on the community, from providing feedback on cell phone tower placement to supporting the continuation of the youth transit pass program. They even played a part in expanding YAC membership, ensuring that more youth voices are heard.

YAC offers more than just an opportunity to weigh in on municipal issues. It’s also a place for personal growth and leadership development. Through participation, members gain valuable experience, build their portfolios for post-secondary education or career pursuits, and join a network of like-minded young leaders who are passionate about community advocacy.

If you know someone between the ages of 14 and 24 who wants to make a real difference, now is the time to encourage them to apply for the Youth Advisory Council. Applications are available online, and the deadline for submissions is on October 15, 2024.
