
The Asclepius Medical Camp for Youth was founded in 2009 by University of Alberta medical students as an initiative to increase enrollment of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds in medical school.
Participant Requirements
Students in Grade 9, 10, 11 or 12 students in the current school year
Low income background* OR other such perceived barriers (e.g. financial, cultural, language, social) to pursuing a career in medicine
Aptitude for learning and a desire to acquire knowledge
Activities
Human anatomy and physiology lectures
Clinical skills (ranging from otoscope and stethoscope use to suturing and ultrasounds)
Group discussions/problem-based learning
Interaction with medical students, physicians and patients
Financial planning and advice
Field games and team building
Two evening social events
Who makes a good applicant for the camp?
Students that display:
An aptitude for learning and a desire to acquire knowledge
Empathy
Integrity
Positive attitude
Maturity
Ability to work in a team
An interest in healthcare is a plus!
Student potential is important, not grades!
