The Youth Advisory Council meets regularly to discuss issues pertinent to young people in the City of Grande Prairie and the surrounding area. Meetings are also a forum for GPYAC to:

  • Organize youth events/activities
  • Provide feedback or comments on Council policies or development applications
  • Be consulted about youth issues or initiatives
  • Receive training on issues or skills

Impacting Change

Past and present Youth Advisory Councils have been involved in organizing many events and activities for young people in Grande Prairie. They talk to peers about issues that are important to them and made sure that Council and community members listen to what young people have to say.

Past Youth Advisory Councillors have addressed issues such as:

  • Discrimination
  • LGBTQ+ Education
  • Sexual health education
  • Exploring and promoting youth friendly spaces in the community
  • Apathy is boring: Engaging youth to vote
  • The City of Grande Prairie’s Transit Master Plan
  • Truth and Reconciliation of the Indigenous People of Canada

Past Events include:

  • Youth Engagement Awards
  • “Connecting the Dots” documentary screen and mental health Q&A session
  • Photography Art Exhibition by youth for youth
  • Open Mic showcasing local young musical talent
  • Me to We Youth Community Leadership Training
  • "From Redneck to Rainbow" film screening of the Youth Council produced documentary
