Prompt action is crucial! Alberta Sustainable Resource Development confirms that local populations of adult Mountain Pine Beetles have emerged and are now looking for new pine trees to attack.
Residents are encouraged to inspect their pine trees weekly and look for small 1/2” (13mm) sized pitch tubes on the trunk or fine reddish sawdust in bark crevices or on the ground around the base of the tree. If the beetle attack is detected early and if they are present in low numbers, then the beetles can usually be dug out and the tree saved. Prompt action is crucial!
Landowners who detect MPB in a tree are asked to contact Jim Donnelly at the City of Grande Prairie immediately (780-513-5226) and an inspector will stop by. If the tree is located in a backyard, the resident is requested to grant the inspector verbal permission to access to the property.
The quicker these trees are detected the more trees we will be able to save. Prompt action is crucial! Help us help you!
