July BEEP: Animals in the Park

Wednesday, July 02, 2008 3:19:00 PM

During the month of July, Enforcement Services’ Bylaw and Animal Control Officers will be carrying out enforcement and awareness of animal control issues, especially as it relates to the City’s park system.

Here are a couple things to keep in mind:

1. Within the City of Grande Prairie all dogs and cats are to be on a leash at all times when not on the animal owners’ property.  Dogs are not permitted within 20 meters of any playground equipment, and not permitted on any school property.

2. All animal solid waste must be picked up immediately, and dealt with in a sanitary manor (most of the city parks and walking trails have a baggy dispenser to aid in this).

3. The City of Grande Prairie has provided dog owners with a designated off leash area located at 100 Street and 67 Avenue near the south bear creek ball diamonds, an excellent place for dogs and their owners to socialize with others.

4. All dogs and cats that are in the City need to be licensed. The licensing fees vary depending on if the animal is spayed or neutered. Licenses can be purchased on line (www.muniportal.ca), at City Hall, the RCMP Detachment or the Grande Prairie SPCA.

Enforcement Services’ aim is to get more animal owners to follow the rules around their animals which will enhance everyone’s ability to enjoy our parks and outdoor spaces.

Please contact Enforcement Services at 780-830-5790, or at es_contact@cityofgp.com, for more info.
